I use the Expressive Therapies approach to Sandplay, which is based on the work of Dora Kalff, a Jungian therapist who developed sandplay therapy in Switzerland in the 1950’s and 1960s.
The tactile and creative nature of sandplay therapy facilitates access to the unconscious mind, allowing the deeper aspects of the psyche to be explored and expressed in a safe and natural way.
Symbols are selected (figurines, ornaments or objects from nature) and arranged in a tray of sand. The process of selecting the symbols, arranging them in the tray, exploring their meaning and sometimes re-arranging them, can often bring insight and self awareness that promotes healing and growth.
I have found sandplay therapy to be a gentle and soothing approach to emotional release, self understanding and problem solving. Clients of all ages have been able to express and process emotions, explore issues and find direction.
